fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Resistance against Fascism (fight against Mussolini and the German occupation).<\/li><li>Political involvement:<ul><li>After the traumatic experience with the fascism, most of the directors had a high political consciousness. Some of them, like Roberto Rosellini or Luchino Visconti, were during that time members of the PCI (Italian Communist Party).<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Social Consciousness:<ul><li>The directors frequently set their stories among poor and working class.<\/li><li>The Neorealism tries to depict the terrible conditions in the post war life in the everyday Italian life.<\/li><li>Defeat, poverty and desperation are always present.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Children play a key role in most of these movies. They are the victims of the terrible situation and, at the same time, the observers of the struggles and tragedies of their parents.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1>Style Elements<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"220_6_4\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/831593613?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Motto: \u201cSimplicity is beauty\u201d<\/li><li>Film-makers avoided any kind of sophistication \u2013 as a way to pay respect to the simple lives they try to depict.<\/li><li>Naturalistic \u201cmise-en-sc\u00e8ne\u201d. (They had no other way because the traditional Cinecitt\u00e0 studios in Rome, where Italian pictures were produced, were totally destroyed during the liberation of Rome in 1944. The directors had to take their cameras into the Italian Streets and they selected poor neighborhoods and the countryside).<\/li><li>They shoot with available light.<\/li><li>Their goal was to attain a documentary-like spontaneity.<\/li><li>Frequently, they worked with non-professional actors to achieve more credibility.<\/li><li>They improvised dialogues and frame compositions.<\/li><li>To make the realistic effect stronger, they also give up camera movements (tracking or crane shoots).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1>Filmmakers<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2>Roberto Rosellini (1906 \u2013 1977)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The most political of all neorealist directors \u2013 and also the most intellectual.<\/li><li>For some years he was a member of the PCI (the already mentioned Italian Communist Party)<\/li><li>For many critics, he is the real creator of Neorealism with his movie <strong>Roma, Citt\u00e0 Aperta<\/strong> (Rome, Open City,1945)<\/li><li>This movie, that was shot when the Germans were still in Italy, is a description of the life of the most humble people of Rome during the time of the German occupation. (1952) <\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>For all this movies, he used unknown and non-professional actors.<\/li><li>He also develop from Neorealism.
